NVIDIA power management mode and Low Latency Mode: the best settings for gaming
Short answer
UpdatedTwo settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel under Manage 3D settings affect delay most. Power management mode decides whether the graphics card may slow down between frames, and Low Latency Mode limits how many frames the processor may prepare ahead. This tweak sets Low Latency Mode to On and power management to Prefer maximum performance in the global profile.
What it does
Two settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel under Manage 3D settings affect delay most. Power management mode decides whether the graphics card may slow down between frames, and Low Latency Mode limits how many frames the processor may prepare ahead. This tweak sets Low Latency Mode to On and power management to Prefer maximum performance in the global profile.
In the app the switch is called "NVIDIA Low-Latency Profile", described there as: Sets Low Latency Mode to On (1 pre-rendered frame) and power management to Prefer maximum performance in the global NVIDIA profile.
When it helps, and when it hurts
When it helps
- Games where the graphics card is the limit and frames queue up: a shorter queue means less input delay.
- Frame time dips caused by the card clocking down in light scenes and taking a moment to speed up again.
When it hurts
- Prefer maximum performance makes the card draw more power and run warmer at idle and in light scenes, which matters on a laptop.
- In games with NVIDIA Reflex, Reflex replaces Low Latency Mode, so that part does nothing there.
- When the processor is the limit, a shorter queue changes very little.
What it writes
Exactly what the switch changes, read from the app's source. Switching it off is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.
This tweak has no fixed list of registry values to print here: it works through a driver's own settings, scheduled tasks or values that differ from PC to PC (per device, per adapter or per installed game). The app reads what your PC has and changes only that.
How to undo it
In the app: Yes
Switching it off puts the two driver settings back as they were, or back to the driver's defaults if you had never set them.
Switch the tweak off in Frozen Tweaks.
Changing several settings at once? The app's Make a restore point button, on every plan, makes a Windows restore point before you start.
Verdict
The right global default on a desktop with an NVIDIA card. On a laptop, set power management per game instead.
