Why building and editing feel bad even at high FPS

Fortnite players regularly report that builds feel delayed on a machine hitting 200 FPS. That is an input-latency problem, and frame rate alone does not describe it. The chain from your click to a build appearing has several stages, and any one of them can dominate.

  • Reflex off, or set to On without Boost. Boost specifically helps in CPU-bound moments, and building sequences are heavily CPU-bound.
  • V-Sync enabled anywhere - in game, in the driver, or through a frame limiter that queues frames. This alone adds a full frame of delay.
  • No frame cap on a variable-refresh display. Hitting the refresh ceiling queues frames and adds latency at exactly the wrong time.
  • Running in borderless windowed without the Windows windowed-game optimization enabled.
  • Server-side network delay, which no client setting fixes. Check your ping and packet loss in the net debug stats before blaming your PC.

Shader stutter after every update

Unreal Engine 5 compiles shaders on demand and caches them. After a Fortnite patch, a GPU driver update, or a Windows feature update, that cache is invalidated and the first session rebuilds it. The symptom is severe hitching for the first several minutes that then disappears entirely.

This is not a problem with your settings and no tweak fixes it. Load into a Creative island or the lobby for a few minutes after any update rather than diagnosing a fault that resolves itself. If the hitching persists beyond a full session, then look at VRAM headroom, storage speed and background processes.
