Optimizations for windowed games in Windows 11: on or off?

Short answer

Updated

Windows 11 can move borderless and windowed DirectX 10 and 11 games to the newer flip presentation model, which fullscreen games and DirectX 12 already use. That removes a copy of each frame through the desktop compositor. This tweak turns the setting on (Settings, System, Display, Graphics).

What it does

Windows 11 can move borderless and windowed DirectX 10 and 11 games to the newer flip presentation model, which fullscreen games and DirectX 12 already use. That removes a copy of each frame through the desktop compositor. This tweak turns the setting on (Settings, System, Display, Graphics).

In the app the switch is called "Optimize Windowed Games", described there as: Lets Windows 11 show borderless and windowed DirectX 10 and 11 games the way it shows fullscreen ones, with less delay.

When it helps, and when it hurts

When it helps

  • DirectX 10 and 11 games in borderless or windowed mode: lower delay, and features such as variable refresh rate and Auto HDR start working there.

When it hurts

  • A few older games show flicker, wrong overlays or broken capture with it. For those, turn it off per game in the Graphics settings.
  • It does nothing for DirectX 12 and Vulkan games, or for exclusive fullscreen.

What it writes

Exactly what the switch changes, read from the app's source. Switching it off is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

This tweak has no fixed list of registry values to print here: it works through a driver's own settings, scheduled tasks or values that differ from PC to PC (per device, per adapter or per installed game). The app reads what your PC has and changes only that.

How to undo it

In the app: Yes

Switching it off puts the Windows graphics setting back exactly as it was.

Switch the tweak off in Frozen Tweaks.

Changing several settings at once? The app's Make a restore point button, on every plan, makes a Windows restore point before you start.

Verdict

On is the right default on Windows 11. Turn it off only for a game that misbehaves.
