AMD Radeon Anti-Lag: what it does, when to turn it on, and Anti-Lag 2

Short answer

Updated

Radeon Anti-Lag paces the processor so it does not get ahead of the graphics card, which shortens the queue of frames waiting to be drawn. This tweak turns Anti-Lag on globally through AMD's own software interface, on cards that support it.

What it does

Radeon Anti-Lag paces the processor so it does not get ahead of the graphics card, which shortens the queue of frames waiting to be drawn. This tweak turns Anti-Lag on globally through AMD's own software interface, on cards that support it.

In the app the switch is called "AMD Latency Policy", described there as: Turns on Radeon Anti-Lag for every game on AMD graphics cards that support it.

When it helps, and when it hurts

When it helps

  • Games where the graphics card is the limit: the delay between your input and the frame that shows it gets shorter.

When it hurts

  • When the processor is the limit, there is no queue to shorten and nothing changes.
  • Anti-Lag 2 is a different thing: games build it in, and where a game offers it, use the in-game switch.
  • Do not confuse it with Anti-Lag+, the driver-injected version AMD withdrew after it triggered anti-cheat bans. This tweak uses the standard driver setting.

What it writes

Exactly what the switch changes, read from the app's source. Switching it off is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

This tweak has no fixed list of registry values to print here: it works through a driver's own settings, scheduled tasks or values that differ from PC to PC (per device, per adapter or per installed game). The app reads what your PC has and changes only that.

How to undo it

In the app: Yes

Switching it off turns Anti-Lag off again on the cards where the tweak turned it on.

Switch the tweak off in Frozen Tweaks.

Changing several settings at once? The app's Make a restore point button, on every plan, makes a Windows restore point before you start.

Verdict

A safe default for AMD cards. It does the most in graphics-bound games.
