Short answer

Updated

The advertising ID is a per-user identifier Windows gives to apps so ads can be targeted across them. This tweak turns it off for your account and sets the policy that disables it for the PC, and opts out of language-based ad targeting. In the registry it sets Enabled to 0 under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AdvertisingInfo, and 4 more values.

What it does

The advertising ID is a per-user identifier Windows gives to apps so ads can be targeted across them. This tweak turns it off for your account and sets the policy that disables it for the PC, and opts out of language-based ad targeting.

In the app the switch is called "Disable Advertising ID", described there as: Disables Windows ad tracking ID, suggested content, and cross-app ad targeting.

When it helps, and when it hurts

When it helps

  • Privacy: apps can no longer link what you do across them for advertising.

When it hurts

  • Ads in apps become less relevant. Nothing else changes.

What it writes

How to undo it

In the app: Yes

Switching it off sets a standard Windows value, which may not be exactly how you had it.

Switch the tweak off in Frozen Tweaks. It writes Enabled back to 1. It deletes DisabledByGroupPolicy, HttpAcceptLanguageOptOut, SubscribedContent-338393Enabled and the others marked in the table, so Windows uses its built-in behavior again.

Changing several settings at once? The app's Make a restore point button, on every plan, makes a Windows restore point before you start.

Verdict

Turn it off. There is no cost.
