# Disable the Windows advertising ID: DisabledByGroupPolicy and the Enabled value

**Short answer:** The advertising ID is a per-user identifier Windows gives to apps so ads can be targeted across them. This tweak turns it off for your account and sets the policy that disables it for the PC, and opts out of language-based ad targeting. In the registry it sets Enabled to 0 under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AdvertisingInfo, and 4 more values.

## In the app

- Switch: Disable Advertising ID (Security, Free, Standard)
- Undo: Yes. Switching it off sets a standard Windows value, which may not be exactly how you had it.
- Catalog row: https://frozentweaks.com/tweaks#t-1126

## What it does

The advertising ID is a per-user identifier Windows gives to apps so ads can be targeted across them. This tweak turns it off for your account and sets the policy that disables it for the PC, and opts out of language-based ad targeting.

In the app the switch is called "Disable Advertising ID", described there as: Disables Windows ad tracking ID, suggested content, and cross-app ad targeting.

## When it helps

- Privacy: apps can no longer link what you do across them for advertising.

## When it hurts

- Ads in apps become less relevant. Nothing else changes.

## What it writes

Read from the app's source. "Switching it off" is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

Registry values:

| Key | Value | With the tweak | Switching it off |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AdvertisingInfo` | `Enabled` | `0` | 1 |
| `HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AdvertisingInfo` | `DisabledByGroupPolicy` | `1` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |
| `HKCU\Control Panel\International\User Profile` | `HttpAcceptLanguageOptOut` | `1` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |
| `HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager` | `SubscribedContent-338393Enabled` | `0` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |
| `HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager` | `SubscribedContent-353694Enabled` | `0` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |

## The same change by hand

Run in a Command Prompt opened as administrator. Make a restore point first.

```bat
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AdvertisingInfo" /v "Enabled" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AdvertisingInfo" /v "DisabledByGroupPolicy" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\International\User Profile" /v "HttpAcceptLanguageOptOut" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager" /v "SubscribedContent-338393Enabled" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager" /v "SubscribedContent-353694Enabled" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
```

Put it back:

```bat
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AdvertisingInfo" /v "Enabled" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\AdvertisingInfo" /v "DisabledByGroupPolicy" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Control Panel\International\User Profile" /v "HttpAcceptLanguageOptOut" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager" /v "SubscribedContent-338393Enabled" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager" /v "SubscribedContent-353694Enabled" /f
```

See what it is set to now:

```bat
reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AdvertisingInfo" /v "Enabled"
```

## How to undo it

Switch the tweak off in Frozen Tweaks. It writes Enabled back to 1. It deletes DisabledByGroupPolicy, HttpAcceptLanguageOptOut, SubscribedContent-338393Enabled and the others marked in the table, so Windows uses its built-in behavior again.

## Verdict

Turn it off. There is no cost.
