Is PC Optimization Software Safe? What to Check Before Installing

Ask a single question about any optimization tool: does it change your operating system, or does it change your game? Everything else follows from the answer.

Some settings sit right on the line between speed and protection. Memory Integrity is the clearest example: turning it off can give back a little performance on some CPUs and removes a real layer of kernel protection, and some anti-cheat systems want it on. What to verify before you install anything
Check whether it is code signed
Right-click the installer, Properties, Digital Signatures tab. A valid signature from a named publisher does not guarantee good behaviour, but its absence on a commercial tool is a meaningful warning.
Confirm the installer does not need your antivirus off
This is not a false positive problem that legitimate vendors live with: they get their binaries signed and submitted to antivirus vendors for whitelisting. Any instruction to turn off Defender before installing should end the evaluation.
Look for a documented list of what it changes
You should be able to read what each optimization does before applying it. If the interface is an opaque progress bar, you are being deliberately prevented from evaluating the product.
Confirm there is an undo
Not just an uninstaller: an undo. Uninstalling a tool that changed forty registry values does not change them back unless the tool was designed to.
Create a restore point yourself
Do not rely on the tool to do it. Start, 'Create a restore point', System Restore Configure, turn protection on, Create. One minute of work.
Never download it from anywhere but the vendor
Cracked and repacked tweak tools are the most common malware delivery route in this category. A licence you did not pay for is not free; it is priced in credentials.
Benchmark before and after
Record average and 1% low FPS in the same scene with the same settings. If the tool cannot demonstrate a difference on your hardware, uninstall it. This also catches tools that do nothing at all.

Can FPS boosting software get you banned?
Only if it operates inside the game. Software that injects DLLs, hooks the rendering pipeline, or modifies game files behaves identically to cheat software from an anti-cheat system's perspective, and detection is based on behaviour rather than intent: legitimate overlay and capture tools have been caught this way. Software that only configures Windows, power plans, GPU driver settings and network parameters runs entirely outside the protected process and carries no ban risk.
Are PC optimizers safe to use with kernel-level anti-cheat?
Settings-level tools are, including alongside Riot Vanguard and the kernel anti-cheat used by modern Call of Duty and Battlefield titles. What those systems object to is process injection, game file tampering, and unsigned or blocklisted kernel drivers. Changing your power mode, GPU driver settings or network configuration is not in any of those categories. Avoid any optimizer that installs its own unsigned driver.
Will optimization software damage my PC?
