Windows protected your PC: running the Frozen Tweaks installer

Short answer

Updated

Windows shows the blue SmartScreen box for downloads that don't have much download history yet, and each new Frozen Tweaks version is a new file. If you downloaded the installer from frozentweaks.com, select More info, then Run anyway, and allow the admin prompt. Check the file's SHA-256 first if you want to be sure it's ours.

How to run the installer

  1. Download it from frozentweaks.com

Get the installer from the download page. Don't run copies from anywhere else, such as file sites, mirrors or a file someone sent you.

  2. Select More info

In the blue Windows protected your PC box, select More info. Windows then shows the file's name and its publisher.

  3. Select Run anyway

Select Run anyway. No Run anyway button? See the questions below.

  4. Allow the admin prompt

Windows asks Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device? Check that it names a verified publisher, then select Yes.

Why does Windows warn about the installer?

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen checks programs you download against a list of files that are well known and downloaded often. Microsoft says a file, an app or a certificate with an established reputation shows no warning, and one without a reputation gets one (Microsoft Defender SmartScreen overview (opens in a new tab)).

Each Frozen Tweaks version is a new file, so it starts with little download history, even though the installer is EV code-signed. The blue box says Windows doesn't know the file well yet. It doesn't say Windows found something in it.

How do I check the file is the real one?

Windows has two checks built in. Neither needs extra software.

Compare the SHA-256

The download page lists the installer's SHA-256, a fingerprint of the file's exact content. Open PowerShell and run:

POWERSHELL
Get-FileHash "$env:USERPROFILE\Downloads\FrozenTweaks*.exe"

Get-FileHash uses SHA-256 unless you ask for another algorithm. If the Hash it prints matches the one on the download page character for character (upper and lower case don't matter), your file is exactly the one we published. If it doesn't match, delete the file and download it again from frozentweaks.com.

Check the signature

Right-click the installer, select Properties and open the Digital Signatures tab. Select the signature, then Details: Windows says This digital signature is OK. when the file is signed and hasn't changed since.

Why does Frozen Tweaks need admin rights?

Frozen Tweaks changes Windows system settings, such as services, power plans and registry values, and Windows only lets an administrator change those. So Windows asks when you install it and each time the app starts.

It works on Windows only: it never injects code into a game, reads or writes game memory, edits game files or installs drivers. That's why it can't get you banned.

Questions

Is the SmartScreen warning normal for Frozen Tweaks?

Yes, for a new version. SmartScreen warns about files it hasn't seen downloaded often, and each version of the installer is a new file. If you downloaded it from frozentweaks.com, select More info, then Run anyway.

What if there is no Run anyway button?

Then a policy on this PC blocks programs that SmartScreen doesn't know, which is common on work and school PCs. Install Frozen Tweaks on a PC you manage yourself, or ask whoever manages this one.

Should I turn SmartScreen off?

No. You don't need to. More info and Run anyway let this one file through and leave SmartScreen on for everything else.

Does Windows ask for admin rights every time?

Yes. Frozen Tweaks asks for admin rights each time it starts, because it changes system settings. Select Yes when the prompt names a verified publisher.
