Disable Windows Error Reporting (WerSvc): what it does and what you lose

DebloatFreeUndo: YesUpdated View as Markdown

Short answer

Updated

Windows Error Reporting collects a crash dump when a program fails and can send it to Microsoft. Writing that dump is the pause you sometimes see after a game crashes. This tweak sets the policy that disables reporting and the WerSvc service. In the registry it sets Disabled to 1 under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting.

What it does

Windows Error Reporting collects a crash dump when a program fails and can send it to Microsoft. Writing that dump is the pause you sometimes see after a game crashes. This tweak sets the policy that disables reporting and the WerSvc service.

In the app the switch is called "Disable Windows Error Reporting", described there as: Prevents WER uploads/popups and related CPU spikes.

When it helps, and when it hurts

When it helps

  • Faster recovery after a crash: the crashed game closes at once instead of waiting for a report.

When it hurts

  • No crash dumps and no 'problem reports' history, which a developer or support person may ask for when you report a bug.

What it writes

Exactly what the switch changes, read from the app's source. Switching it off is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

The same change by hand

You do not need the app for this one. These commands make the changes from the table above. Run them in a Command Prompt opened as administrator, and make a restore point first.

Make the change · CMD
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting" /v "Disabled" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
sc config "WerSvc" start= disabled
Put it back · CMD
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting" /v "Disabled" /f
sc config "WerSvc" start= demand
See what it is set to now · CMD
reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting" /v "Disabled"

How to undo it

In the app: Yes

Switching it off sets a standard Windows value, which may not be exactly how you had it.

Switch the tweak off in Frozen Tweaks. It deletes Disabled, so Windows uses its built-in behavior again. It sets WerSvc to Manual.

Changing several settings at once? The app's Make a restore point button, on every plan, makes a Windows restore point before you start.

Verdict

Fine for most players. Switch it back on while you are helping someone debug a crash.
