# Disable Windows Error Reporting (WerSvc): what it does and what you lose

**Short answer:** Windows Error Reporting collects a crash dump when a program fails and can send it to Microsoft. Writing that dump is the pause you sometimes see after a game crashes. This tweak sets the policy that disables reporting and the WerSvc service. In the registry it sets Disabled to 1 under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting.

## In the app

- Switch: Disable Windows Error Reporting (Debloat, Free, Standard)
- Undo: Yes. Switching it off sets a standard Windows value, which may not be exactly how you had it.
- Catalog row: https://frozentweaks.com/tweaks#t-1018

## What it does

Windows Error Reporting collects a crash dump when a program fails and can send it to Microsoft. Writing that dump is the pause you sometimes see after a game crashes. This tweak sets the policy that disables reporting and the WerSvc service.

In the app the switch is called "Disable Windows Error Reporting", described there as: Prevents WER uploads/popups and related CPU spikes.

## When it helps

- Faster recovery after a crash: the crashed game closes at once instead of waiting for a report.

## When it hurts

- No crash dumps and no 'problem reports' history, which a developer or support person may ask for when you report a bug.

## What it writes

Read from the app's source. "Switching it off" is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

Registry values:

| Key | Value | With the tweak | Switching it off |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting` | `Disabled` | `1` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |

Services (startup type):

| Service | With the tweak | Switching it off |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `WerSvc` (Windows Error Reporting Service) | Disabled | Manual |

Source: Tweaks/wer_disable.hpp in the app's source, app 2.0.0, checked 2026-10-08.

## The same change by hand

Run in a Command Prompt opened as administrator. Make a restore point first.

```bat
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting" /v "Disabled" /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
sc config "WerSvc" start= disabled
```

Put it back:

```bat
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting" /v "Disabled" /f
sc config "WerSvc" start= demand
```

See what it is set to now:

```bat
reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting" /v "Disabled"
```

## How to undo it

Switch the tweak off in Frozen Tweaks. It deletes Disabled, so Windows uses its built-in behavior again. It sets WerSvc to Manual.

## Verdict

Fine for most players. Switch it back on while you are helping someone debug a crash.
