Stop Edge and WebView2 from updating in the background: EdgeUpdate services and policy

DebloatProUndo: PartialUpdated View as Markdown

Short answer

Updated

WebView2 is the Edge engine other apps embed, and the EdgeUpdate services keep it and Edge up to date in the background. This tweak disables the two update services and sets the update policy to never check. In the registry it sets AutoUpdateCheckPeriodMinutes to 0 under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate, and 1 more value.

What it does

WebView2 is the Edge engine other apps embed, and the EdgeUpdate services keep it and Edge up to date in the background. This tweak disables the two update services and sets the update policy to never check.

In the app the switch is called "Disable Edge WebView2 Auto-Update", described there as: Disables EdgeUpdate and policy to stop WebView2 runtime background updates.

When it helps, and when it hurts

When it helps

  • Stopping the periodic update checks and installs.

When it hurts

  • Edge and WebView2 stop getting security updates. Apps built on WebView2 (the new Outlook, Teams, parts of some launchers) keep running on an aging engine.
  • Switch it off and update from time to time.

What it writes

Exactly what the switch changes, read from the app's source. Switching it off is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

How to undo it

In the app: Partial

Switching it off lets Edge and WebView2 update again, but leaves an update policy in place and the Edge update service on Manual instead of Automatic.

Switch the tweak off in Frozen Tweaks. It writes AutoUpdateCheckPeriodMinutes back to 1440, DisableAutoUpdateChecksCheckboxValue back to 0. It sets edgeupdate to Manual, edgeupdatem to Manual. Switching it off lets Edge and WebView2 update again, but leaves an update policy in place and the Edge update service on Manual instead of Automatic.

Changing several settings at once? The app's Make a restore point button, on every plan, makes a Windows restore point before you start.

Verdict

Only sensible if you take over updating yourself. For most people the security cost is higher than the gain.
