# Remove Microsoft Edge and Edge Update from Windows: what is removed and what breaks

**Short answer:** This removes the Edge browser, disables the two Edge Update services and their scheduled tasks, and sets the policy that keeps Windows from installing Edge again. In the registry it sets MetricsReportingEnabled to 0 under HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge, and 2 more values.

## In the app

- Switch: Remove Microsoft Edge & Edge Update (Debloat, Pro, Advanced)
- Undo: One-way. Switching it off removes the update blocks but doesn't reinstall Edge. Get it again from microsoft.com.
- Catalog row: https://frozentweaks.com/tweaks#t-1022

## What it does

This removes the Edge browser, disables the two Edge Update services and their scheduled tasks, and sets the policy that keeps Windows from installing Edge again.

In the app the switch is called "Remove Microsoft Edge & Edge Update", described there as: Uninstalls Edge, disables EdgeUpdate services/tasks, and blocks reinstall.

## When it helps

- Removing Edge's background processes, its update checks and its prompts for good.

## When it hurts

- It is one-way: switching the tweak off does not reinstall Edge. You would install it again from Microsoft's website.
- Some Windows features open links in Edge and a few apps rely on its WebView2 engine. Keep another browser installed first.

## What it writes

Read from the app's source. "Switching it off" is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

Registry values:

| Key | Value | With the tweak | Switching it off |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge` | `MetricsReportingEnabled` | `0` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |
| `HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate` | `UpdateDefault` | `0` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |
| `HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate` | `AutoUpdateCheckPeriodMinutes` | `0` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |

Services (startup type):

| Service | With the tweak | Switching it off |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `edgeupdate` (Microsoft Edge Update Service (edgeupdate)) | Disabled | Manual |
| `edgeupdatem` (Microsoft Edge Update Service (edgeupdatem)) | Disabled | Manual |

## The same change by hand

Run in a Command Prompt opened as administrator. Make a restore point first.

```bat
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge" /v "MetricsReportingEnabled" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate" /v "UpdateDefault" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate" /v "AutoUpdateCheckPeriodMinutes" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
sc config "edgeupdate" start= disabled
sc config "edgeupdatem" start= disabled
```

Put it back:

```bat
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge" /v "MetricsReportingEnabled" /f
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate" /v "UpdateDefault" /f
reg delete "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\EdgeUpdate" /v "AutoUpdateCheckPeriodMinutes" /f
sc config "edgeupdate" start= demand
sc config "edgeupdatem" start= demand
```

See what it is set to now:

```bat
reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Edge" /v "MetricsReportingEnabled"
```

## How to undo it

This tweak is one-way in the app: switching it off does not put things back. Switching it off removes the update blocks but doesn't reinstall Edge. Get it again from microsoft.com.

## Verdict

Only for people who are sure they do not want Edge. Stopping Edge from running in the background is the gentler option.
