# Turn off Windows animations and transparency for performance: VisualFXSetting explained

**Short answer:** Windows draws transparency, shadows and animations for windows and the taskbar. VisualFXSetting chooses the preset, and separate values switch transparency and taskbar animations. This tweak selects the performance preset and turns transparency and animations off. In the registry it sets EnableTransparency to 0 under HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize, and 4 more values.

## In the app

- Switch: Reduce Visual Effects (Windows, Free, Standard)
- Undo: Yes. Switching it off sets a standard Windows value, which may not be exactly how you had it.
- Catalog row: https://frozentweaks.com/tweaks#t-1021

## What it does

Windows draws transparency, shadows and animations for windows and the taskbar. VisualFXSetting chooses the preset, and separate values switch transparency and taskbar animations. This tweak selects the performance preset and turns transparency and animations off.

In the app the switch is called "Reduce Visual Effects", described there as: Disables transparency/animations to free GPU/CPU time.

## When it helps

- Older or integrated graphics, where the desktop itself competes with a windowed or borderless game.
- A desktop that feels quicker because windows open without animation.

## When it hurts

- Windows looks plainer: no transparency, no smooth window animations.
- A game in exclusive fullscreen on a dedicated graphics card gains close to nothing.

## What it writes

Read from the app's source. "Switching it off" is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

Registry values:

| Key | Value | With the tweak | Switching it off |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize` | `EnableTransparency` | `0` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |
| `HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced` | `TaskbarAnimations` | `0` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |
| `HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects` | `VisualFXSetting` | `2` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |
| `HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop` | `DragFullWindows` | `0` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |
| `HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics` | `MinAnimate` | `0` | Not set (the value is deleted; Windows decides) |

## The same change by hand

Run in a Command Prompt opened as administrator. Make a restore point first.

```bat
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize" /v "EnableTransparency" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" /v "TaskbarAnimations" /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f
reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects" /v "VisualFXSetting" /t REG_DWORD /d 2 /f
reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v "DragFullWindows" /t REG_SZ /d "0" /f
reg add "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics" /v "MinAnimate" /t REG_SZ /d "0" /f
```

Put it back:

```bat
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize" /v "EnableTransparency" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" /v "TaskbarAnimations" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects" /v "VisualFXSetting" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop" /v "DragFullWindows" /f
reg delete "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics" /v "MinAnimate" /f
```

See what it is set to now:

```bat
reg query "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Themes\Personalize" /v "EnableTransparency"
```

## How to undo it

Switch the tweak off in Frozen Tweaks. It deletes EnableTransparency, TaskbarAnimations, VisualFXSetting and the others marked in the table, so Windows uses its built-in behavior again.

## Verdict

A clear win on weak graphics hardware and a matter of taste on strong hardware.
