# Xbox services: which ones you can turn off and which will break your games

**Short answer:** The Xbox services are XblAuthManager, XblGameSave and XboxGipSvc. Disabling them removes a small background load, but this is one of the tweaks most likely to break something: XblAuthManager and XblGameSave are required for Game Pass and Microsoft Store games, and XboxGipSvc handles Xbox controller input.

## In the app

- Switch: Disable Xbox Services (Debloat, Free, Standard)
- Undo: Yes. Switching it off sets a standard Windows value, which may not be exactly how you had it.
- Catalog row: https://frozentweaks.com/tweaks#t-1017

## What it does

These services sit idle most of the time and start on demand. The background cost of leaving them alone is genuinely small.

Disabling them is mostly about removing services you never use, not about reclaiming meaningful resources.

## When it helps

- Marginally fewer running services and a slightly smaller memory footprint.
- Reasonable if you exclusively play Steam or Epic titles with a mouse and keyboard.

## When it hurts

- Game Pass and Microsoft Store games will fail to launch or fail to sign in.
- Xbox controllers can stop working correctly if XboxGipSvc is disabled.
- Cloud saves for Xbox-integrated titles stop syncing, which can mean lost progress.

## What it writes

Read from the app's source. "Switching it off" is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

Services (startup type):

| Service | With the tweak | Switching it off | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `XblAuthManager` (Xbox Live Auth Manager) | Disabled | Manual | Signs you in to Xbox Live. Required for Game Pass and Store games. |
| `XblGameSave` (Xbox Live Game Save) | Disabled | Manual | Syncs saves to the cloud for Xbox-integrated titles. |
| `XboxGipSvc` (Xbox Accessory Management) | Disabled | Manual | Handles Xbox controller and accessory input. |

## The same change by hand

Run in a Command Prompt opened as administrator. Make a restore point first.

```bat
sc config "XblAuthManager" start= disabled
sc config "XblGameSave" start= disabled
sc config "XboxGipSvc" start= disabled
```

Put it back:

```bat
sc config "XblAuthManager" start= demand
sc config "XblGameSave" start= demand
sc config "XboxGipSvc" start= demand
```

## How to undo it

Set all three back to Manual: that is the Windows default, not Automatic. Switching it off in Frozen Tweaks sets all three to Manual, which may not be exactly how you had them.

## Verdict

The clearest example of a tweak whose value depends on what you play. If you use Game Pass or an Xbox controller, skip it entirely: the gain does not come close to the risk.
