# Windows Search indexing: when disabling WSearch helps and when it just makes search useless

**Short answer:** Disabling the WSearch service stops Windows continuously indexing file contents in the background. That indexing is genuine disk and CPU activity and can cause hitching, particularly on mechanical drives or during large file operations. The cost is that Start menu and Explorer file search become dramatically slower.

## In the app

- Switch: Disable Windows Search Indexing (Debloat, Free, Standard)
- Undo: Partial. Switching it off sets Windows Search to Manual. Windows ships it as Automatic (Delayed Start).
- Catalog row: https://frozentweaks.com/tweaks#t-1009

## What it does

WSearch builds and maintains an index of file names and contents so that searching is instant. Maintaining it means reading files in the background, especially after large changes on disk.

The indexer is supposed to back off under load. In practice it is a recognised cause of hitching on slower storage.

## When it helps

- Removes sustained background disk activity, which matters most on mechanical drives.
- Noticeable after large downloads or game installs, when the indexer would otherwise be busy for a long time.

## When it hurts

- Searching in Explorer and the Start menu becomes slow and often unhelpful. This is a real daily-use cost, not a theoretical one.
- Outlook and some other applications rely on the index and degrade noticeably.
- On a fast NVMe drive the performance benefit is usually small.

## What it writes

Read from the app's source. "Switching it off" is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

Services (startup type):

| Service | With the tweak | Switching it off | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `WSearch` (Windows Search) | Disabled | Manual (Windows ships it as Automatic (Delayed Start)) | Builds and maintains the search index of your files. Disabled, background indexing stops entirely. |

## The same change by hand

Run in a Command Prompt opened as administrator. Make a restore point first.

```bat
sc config "WSearch" start= disabled
```

Put it back:

```bat
sc config "WSearch" start= demand
```

## How to undo it

Set WSearch back to Automatic (Delayed Start), which is the Windows default, and start the service. Rebuilding the index afterwards takes a while. Switching it off in Frozen Tweaks sets the service back to a standard start type, which may not be exactly how you had it: if search stays slow, check the start type in services.msc.

## Verdict

Worth it on a mechanical drive or if you never use Windows search. On a fast SSD, the search functionality is usually worth more than the frames.
