# Disable SysMain (Superfetch): when it helps and when it is cargo cult

**Short answer:** SysMain, formerly Superfetch, is a Windows service that preloads frequently used data into spare RAM. Disabling it stops that background disk and CPU activity. On an SSD with 16 GB or more it is usually neutral to mildly positive for frame-time consistency; on a mechanical drive or a low-RAM machine, disabling it can make launches noticeably slower. This is one of the most over-recommended tweaks on the internet.

## In the app

- Switch: Disable SysMain (Superfetch) (Debloat, Free, Standard)
- Undo: Partial. Switching it off sets SysMain to Manual. Windows ships it as Automatic, so set it back in Services if you want it running.

## What it does

SysMain watches which applications you launch and pre-loads parts of them into memory that would otherwise sit unused, so they start faster.

It does this with background disk reads. On a mechanical drive those reads compete directly with whatever your game is streaming, which is where the anti-stutter argument comes from.

## When it helps

- Removes background disk activity that can cause hitching on slower drives.
- Frees a small amount of CPU and RAM on machines that are genuinely constrained.
- Occasionally fixes a specific pathological case where SysMain thrashes on a failing drive.

## When it hurts

- On a modern NVMe SSD the benefit is usually within measurement noise. Do not expect FPS from this.
- Application and game launch times can get slower, since nothing is pre-loaded any more.
- On systems with limited RAM, Windows loses a memory-management heuristic that was actually helping.

## What it writes

Read from the app's source. "Switching it off" is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

Services (startup type):

| Service | With the tweak | Switching it off | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `SysMain` (SysMain (formerly Superfetch)) | Disabled | Manual (Windows ships it as Automatic) | Preloads the apps you use often into spare memory. Disabled, it no longer starts with Windows. |

## The same change by hand

Run in a Command Prompt opened as administrator. Make a restore point first.

```bat
sc config "SysMain" start= disabled
```

Put it back:

```bat
sc config "SysMain" start= demand
```

## How to undo it

Set the SysMain service back to Automatic and start it, from services.msc or with `sc config SysMain start=auto`. Switching it off in Frozen Tweaks sets the service back to a standard start type, which may not be exactly how you had it: if SysMain is not running afterwards, set it to Automatic yourself.

## Verdict

Honest answer: minor. Worth doing if you are on a mechanical drive or chasing stutter, largely pointless on a fast NVMe system with plenty of RAM. It is not the FPS tweak it is often presented as.
