# DsmSvc: what Device Setup Manager does and disabling it

**Short answer:** Device Setup Manager downloads device information and companion apps when you plug in new hardware. This tweak disables it. It sets the DsmSvc service to Disabled.

## In the app

- Switch: Disable Device Setup Manager (Debloat, Pro, Advanced)
- Undo: Yes. Switching it off sets a standard Windows value, which may not be exactly how you had it.
- Catalog row: https://frozentweaks.com/tweaks#t-1097

## What it does

Device Setup Manager downloads device information and companion apps when you plug in new hardware. This tweak disables it.

In the app the switch is called "Disable Device Setup Manager", described there as: Prevents background device metadata fetch & installer activity.

## When it helps

- Stopping Windows from fetching vendor apps and device data on its own.

## When it hurts

- New devices may be set up with a generic name and icon, and vendor companion apps are not installed automatically.

## What it writes

Read from the app's source. "Switching it off" is what the app writes when you turn the tweak off again.

Services (startup type):

| Service | With the tweak | Switching it off |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `DsmSvc` (Device Setup Manager) | Disabled | Manual |

Source: Tweaks/dsmsvc_off.hpp in the app's source, app 2.0.0, checked 2026-10-08.

## The same change by hand

Run in a Command Prompt opened as administrator. Make a restore point first.

```bat
sc config "DsmSvc" start= disabled
```

Put it back:

```bat
sc config "DsmSvc" start= demand
```

## How to undo it

Switch the tweak off in Frozen Tweaks. It sets DsmSvc to Manual.

## Verdict

Reasonable if you install drivers yourself.
