# MSVCP140.dll missing: fix Frozen Tweaks closing on start

**Short answer:** If Frozen Tweaks closes right after it opens, or Windows says MSVCP140.dll was not found, the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (x64) is missing on your PC. It's a free Microsoft component the app needs to start. Install the x64 package from Microsoft, restart if the installer asks, and open Frozen Tweaks again.

**In the FAQ:** [What do I need to run it?](https://frozentweaks.com/#faq-requirements)

## How to fix it

1. **Download the x64 package**: Download Microsoft's latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable for **x64**: [vc_redist.x64.exe](https://aka.ms/vc14/vc_redist.x64.exe), from Microsoft's page [Latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/cpp/windows/latest-supported-vc-redist). Frozen Tweaks is a 64-bit app, so it needs the x64 package.
2. **Install it**: Open vc_redist.x64.exe, tick **I agree to the license terms and conditions** and select **Install**. If it offers **Repair** instead, the package is already there: select Repair to fix its files.
3. **Restart if asked, then open the app**: Restart your PC if the installer asks you to, then open Frozen Tweaks again.

## What does the error mean?

Windows says **The code execution cannot proceed because MSVCP140.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.** when a program needs Microsoft's C++ runtime and the runtime isn't installed. Frozen Tweaks is built with Microsoft's C++ tools, so it needs that runtime to start. Sometimes the app just closes right after it opens, with no message at all.

The same package brings VCRUNTIME140.dll and VCRUNTIME140_1.dll, which the message can name instead. The fix is the same: Microsoft's package, not a single DLL file.

## Should I download MSVCP140.dll from a DLL site?

No. Sites that offer single DLL files aren't Microsoft, and a file from them can be the wrong version or carry malware. Microsoft's installer puts the right files in the right place.

## The app still closes. What now?

- Check that your PC meets the [system requirements](https://frozentweaks.com/download#requirements), **Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit** first: open Settings, System, About. **System type** should say 64-bit operating system.
- Declined the admin prompt by mistake? Open the app again and select **Yes**. Frozen Tweaks doesn't start without admin rights.
- Still closing? [Write to us](https://frozentweaks.com/contact) with the topic **App problem**, your Windows version and the exact error text.

## Questions

### Do I need the x86 or the x64 package?

The x64 package. Frozen Tweaks runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11 only, and Microsoft's x64 package is the one a 64-bit app needs.

### Is the Visual C++ Redistributable free?

Yes. It's a free component from Microsoft, and many games and programs use it too.

### Do I have to uninstall older Visual C++ packages first?

No. Install the latest x64 package. Older Visual C++ packages, such as 2010 or 2013, are separate and can stay installed.
